At Common Good Coffee we’re always on the look out for coffee that drinks gooder, feels gooder, and does gooder. And this July have we got something special for you.

This month’s Special Edition Honduras Natural comes from COMSA, a cooperative in Honduras that is passionate about coffee, invested in its people, and focused on biodynamic agriculture in order to better care for the earth.

COMSA is based in Marcala, Honduras’ first origin denomination. Grown at high altitude in idyllic conditions their organic Fair Trade beans have produced a complex coffee with a velvet body, cherry flavours, exquisite citrus-honey notes and hints of milk chocolate.

But it’s always the people behind the coffee that make it extra special. COMSA was founded by 69 farmers in 2001, and over the past 20 years it has grown to have 1200 members. A founding principle of COMSA is to secure its community’s future. This has meant encouraging quality organic, chemical free agriculture and the development of a viable, sustainable business.

This principle has also led COMSA to seek holistic transformation in its communities. Benefiting farmers, their whānau and wider community are at the heart of COMSA’s philosophy. A key focus on education has seen them build a local primary school and offer scholarships for COMSA workers or their children to go to university amongst other initiatives.

There has also been significant investment in passing on their biodynamic practices through offering organic farming courses to other farmers in their region.

In addition to being Fair Trade certified for the past 14 years, COMSA is also certified SPP (Simbolo de Pequeños Productores); the Small Producers Symbol. SPP is the first Fair Trade farmer-owned certification driven by farmers within Latin America. One of its key purposes is to ensure that small farmers are able to participate in global trade, and for farmers to have input into what a fair trade system looks like for them.
