Special Edition - Guatemala ASOBAGRI

SE2.JPG

Our Spring Special Edition Coffee comes from the lush, mountainous region of Huehuetenango, Guatemala. It's a remarkable story of community, sustainability, and exceptional fair trade organic coffee.

At the heart is ASOBAGRI, a cooperative that has transformed the lives of small-scale farmers while producing unique and exceptional fair trade organic coffees.

Forty years ago, a group of 20 visionary producers came together with a common goal: to create access to markets, financing, and essential services for small farmers. This collaborative effort gave birth to ASOBAGRI, now recognized as one of Guatemala's premier organizations exporting high-quality certified organic and Fairtrade organic coffee around the world - including right here in Aotearoa.

ASOBAGRI's mission is clear: to dedicate itself to certified organic coffee growing and sell specialty coffees in competitive markets and to provide quality services to its members and improve their living conditions.
But they don't stop there. ASOBAGRI envisions itself as a leading associative company, a unique development model recognized both nationally and internationally in the competitive high-quality organic coffee market.

What sets ASOBAGRI apart is not just the quality of their coffee, but their commitment to their community. Comprised of K'anjob'al Maya coffee and cardamom farmers, the cooperative has leveraged fair trade sales to make significant impacts:

  1. Promoting literacy
  2. Diversifying crops and income sources
  3. Providing technical support to farmers
  4. Investing in quality control
  5. Promoting gender equality
  6. Supporting healthcare initiatives

Recent developments include the completion of a new warehouse and office complex in Barillas, with plans for expanded coffee storage facilities in the pipeline.

ASOBAGRI's commitment to quality is evident in every step of their process. Farmers receive comprehensive support, including improvements to wet mills at the farm level, soil diagnostics, and the construction of solar dryers. This attention to detail results in a coffee that is truly exceptional.

We hope you enjoy this roast - we’ve tailored it to particularly suit espresso drinkers, with its sweet cherry, milk chocolate, macadamia nuttiness, mandarin and floral aromas.

Enjoy!
