It’s been a while since our last special edition release. That’s because we’ve been on the hunt for something exceptional. And this Gesha grown by Luis Herrera of Mexico is exactly that.
It is EXCEPTIONAL.
Gesha is a highly prized varietal, known for its uniqueness and high quality. Originally found in Ethiopia, seedlings were brought to Latin America in the 1950s. Gesha was ‘rediscovered’ in 2004 when a Panamian coffee company entered it’s Gesha variety in a Best of Panama competition. The judges were blown away. Since then, Gesha has become renowned for its quality in the cup, being a firm favourite with competitors in the World Barista Championship, the World Brewers Cup and other competitions.
With its delicate almost perfume-like aroma, floral and fruit flavours, the Gesha’s profile is much closer to its Ethiopian tūpuna (ancestors). Yet, the growing conditions in parts of Latin America make it ideal for cultivating this varietal.

Our Gesha comes from a microlot grown by Luis Herrera in the Ocozocoautla de Espinosa of Chiapas, Mexico. Señor Herrera was formerly a manager of and continues to be part of Sociedad de Producción Rural Unión de Ejidos y Comunidad de San Fernando. San Fernando is a co-operative of small-scale coffee farmers. They have invested in forest regeneration and improved coffee quality as well as helping with healthcare, education and financial services. Señor Herrera has been instrumental in regional politics and advocating for coffee farmers at a national level.
Señor Herrera began growing Gesha as part of a programme looking at new and different varieties and processing methods for the purpose of producing high quality coffees. And this one hits the mark.
It has an incredible aroma beginning with soft muscatel and chocolate. This is a very sweet coffee with delicate jasmine and black tea notes. A creamy body with a long and lingering blackcurrant sweetness.
Gesha’s exceptional quality is only one of its features. Purchasing this bean benefits so many around the world. It is certified Fairtrade and organic - caring for the people and earth in Chiapas, Mexico -
Plus $5/kg from every kilo purchased will be redistributed to our partner Joyya - working with neighbourhoods most impacted by extreme poverty and human trafficking.
