Growing up helping his father on the family finca (farm), Melvin Alonzo learnt his craft from the best. His father, Oscar Omar Alonzo is renowned for producing exceptional specialty coffees in Honduras. Our latest special edition is a microlot from Melvin Alonzo’s own farm; which is named Finca Californeo Junior in honour of his father’s “Californeo” coffee.
Melvin is part of Café Orgánico Marcala Sociedad Anónima (COMSA). From its humble beginnings, COMSA has always promoted using organic agricultural techniques and quality coffee among its network of producers. It has sought to safeguard the natural habitat while promoting the wellbeing of its community and its connectedness to the natural environment; thus preserving the gift of one of Honduras’ best coffee terroirs.
Based in Arenales, La Paz at 1407 MASL, Melvin’s farm benefits from the idyllic altitude and climate. Through COMSA and the knowledge passed on from his father, Melvin has invested in organic practices, soil conservation and learnt how to protect flora and fauna on his farm. Melvin aspires to improve the coffee the farm produces each year, with differentiated drying processes and techniques. But he will always retain organic methods. He says “From organic comes the best.”
This microlot is an Icatú varietal that has been naturally processed. Following in his father’s footsteps Melvin has produced a remarkable coffee. We have caringly roasted the microlot we selected to produce the sweet aroma of blackcurrant, followed by the delight of Sanguine peach; a rare variety known for its delicate balance of plum, peach and the richest red wine. With hints of raw cacao and a smooth body this coffee is enchanting from start to finish.
We say that you can drink gooder with Common Good Coffee - and this beautifully crafted coffee from Melvin Alonzo is the real deal.
